Icebreaker: Who am I and why am I studying urban design
I am Liuqing He, a student majoring in Urban Design, my parents are architectural engineers, and their upbringing led me to choose landscape architecture as my undergraduate major. During my third year of undergraduate studies, I took the course of Urban Planning Principles and began to understand and develop an interest in urban planning.
The real reason why I firmly chose urban design as my graduate major began with the 19th Asian Games in 2023. The video of the Syrian President and his wife standing up and applauding for the Syrian delegation at the opening ceremony dominated the hot search list. Out of curiosity, I collected many pictures of Syria before the war. Whether it is architectural design or urban design, they are permeated with their rich religion and long history. Although they have suffered from the war, they are still strong. They said that the rose of Damascus will bloom in every corner of Syria again. So I hope to have the privilege of being a rose planter, contributing to the reconstruction of war-torn countries such as Syria, making cities better, and making people in cities happier.
Moreover, urban design integrates multiple fields such as architecture, urban planning, landscape design, and environmental science. I believe that this interdisciplinary challenge, the intersection and integration of different fields, can help me inspire new design ideas and create more innovative urban spaces.
Although some people believe that urbanization has been largely completed and will be a declining field in the future, I believe that with the acceleration of urbanization, especially in the context of rapid global population growth, urban design has become particularly important, as it directly affects the quality of life for urban residents and environmental sustainability . Therefore, I chose this major not only because of my passion for design, but also because of my high recognition of the profound influence of future urban development and industry prospects.
