How can we contribute to the world of Urban Design?

As a group of aspiring Urban Designers from around the world studying at Newcastle University, we are particularly interested in the issues of spatial injustice within cities. We come from a number of countries including Iran, Saudi Arabia, India, China and the UK, all of which suffer from very different issues. Therefore, there is no blanket solution that can solve all of the spatial injustice in the world. As a cohort we are interested in exploring these different solutions and commenting on a wide variety of subjects within this overarching theme.

Examples of our experiences with spatial injustice include regional inequalities in Quatif, Saudi Arabia. Here work is being carried out to provide more equitable resource distribution and to increase mobility through the city. We have also experienced an unequal distribution of urban services within Qom, Iran where there is a very clear divide between the north and south, the north having much better access to high quality spaces, products, schools and air quality vs much poorer conditions in the south. Within the UK we have seen spatial injustice reinforcing the strong class system present, the North-East particularly having less resources and funding, wages being lower and poverty being higher.
Reflecting on these experiences allows us to design with this in mind and work to reduce the inequalities present.
