Neighbourhood Design

Design of community neighborhood center in the new era

In the era of rapid development of the Internet, great changes have taken place in people’s lifestyle. These changes have a common trend, simple and convenient. In cities, subways, buses and taxis facilitate people’s daily travel, commercial facilities in the city gather to form an urban business circle, which enables people to experience diversified services in one trip. The promotion of the construction of the city’s 15 minute life circle has brought together all business forms in a planned way. Therefore, we need to design better neighborhoods to meet the needs of convenient life and provide the most basic public services for community residents.

The following are the points needing attention in community neighborhood design.

1、 Diversified formats

Community neighborhood center is formed in the process of urban development based on the needs of community residents for a better life. Its basic function is to meet the living needs of community residents. This requires the selection of matching business formats according to the living habits and regional conditions of local community residents, and the allocation of entertainment, catering, community service and other facilities. Build a family housing extension system in the neighborhood center, so that people’s living space can more naturally contact with the outside world, and effectively improve residents’ quality of life. So that people can have a variety of choices when purchasing food materials, which not only enriches the daily life of residents, but also provides convenience for consumers with other needs. At the same time, multi format aggregation also increases the competitive pressure of homogeneous formats.

2、 Humanized service

The convenience and benefit of the people is the starting point of the neighborhood center and the design of the neighborhood center. In the planning and design process, facilities such as barrier free passage, rest area, public toilet and guide board shall be planned to optimize consumers’ consumption experience. Improve the software and hardware facilities of the project, pay attention to the needs of all kinds of people, and give full play to the characteristics of neighborhood centers to facilitate and benefit the people.

The overall functions of the neighborhood center include two main functions: comprehensive service center and commercial services. At the same time, it is integrated to some extent with public parking facilities, basic education, community parks and activity plazas. In terms of commercial layout, small modules mainly take basic living service facilities such as convenience stores and vegetable markets or take public service facilities as functional carriers, while large modules generally take the form of commercial complexes such as shopping centers and fully integrate complete commercial services. From the perspective of social psychology, the function setting of a neighborhood center is not only to simply complete the connection between functions, but also to give the building diversified spiritual attributes, integrate human emotions and choice needs, and create a colorful and rich spatial experience.

As a key node in the spatial organization of a community neighborhood center, the spatial design of the entrance building has at least two levels of meaning: openness and directionality. Openness indicates the need to create a “shared” space between people and the environment, between inside and outside, and between the building and the city. Guidance is achieved through architectural forms and clear and precise façade signage. Entrances can be combined with plazas, underground walkways, and pedestrian spaces on both sides of the street to form a clearly structured and hierarchical open space system for neighborhood centers.

The space of a neighborhood center should not only be contemporary but also reflect cultural inheritance, so that it can cause people’s psychological resonance. A place that lacks cultural inheritance will cause people to feel mentally isolated from the space, so the local culture should be taken into consideration when designing.

One response to “Neighbourhood Design”

  1. Thanks for posting. First of all, this blog mainly talks about the design of the neighborhood in the new era, but the article does not give us a good description of what the neighborhood design in the new era is, which makes us a little confused to read. I am also very interested in neighborhood design, because in the undergraduate graduation project, there are many students who choose the old renovation design of the community. I think this is a big trend in our future design, but also a big challenge. Because some old communities face many problems, but there are few ways to solve them. So I also want to broaden my horizons by learning more knowledge in this area, so that I can have more inspiration when designing. Secondly, in the blog, I mentioned a few considerations in the design of community neighborhoods, which is very good. I think it will be very useful if we encounter designs from similar communities in the future. For example, the diversification of business formats is mentioned in the text, including supporting entertainment, catering, community services and other facilities. As well as humanized services including barrier-free access, rest areas, public toilets, and other facilities planning. This can provide a lot of inspiration for our subsequent designs, and can expand our ideas in our subsequent designs. But if you can add some schematic diagrams of this aspect to the article, it may be more understandable for readers, and it will also increase the fun of reading. In addition, in the penultimate paragraph of the article, it is mentioned that “openness” needs to create a shared space. I especially want to know what specific activities or facilities we can have to realize the openness between the building and the city. In the end, I feel that the end of the article is a little rushed, and it can briefly explain the challenges and opportunities that this new era of community neighborhood design may face. Looking forward to your future blog sharing
