Why Do Co-housing Projects Work — and What Can China’s Fourth-Generation Housing Learn from Them?
Introduction
On the growing issue of aging. Why do some shared housing projects seem to thrive while traditional senior housing fails to inspire a sense of community? By observing global cases – Earthsong Eco-neighbourhood in New Zealand; Yarrow Eco-village. I have come to believe that their success lies not only in architecture, but also in how they empower people to live together with dignity, autonomy and mutual support.
I think China can learn a lot by incorporating shared kitchens, rooftop meeting rooms, and multi-generational units into its housing design. We don’t have to copy everything, but we can adapt these ideas to fit our culture. I believe that by combining solid spatial design with strong social institutions, such as resident councils and neighbourhood support, we can create truly supportive, age-friendly communities.
What impressed me most was how these communities balanced private space with shared living. Residents are neither isolated nor forced to live in a communal setting; instead, thoughtful spatial design encourages people to interact autonomously. Equally important is governance—most communities are self-managed. I think this model has great potential in China, especially as we develop fourth-generation housing that emphasizes vertical greening, shared gardens, and flexible unit layouts.
For me, fourth generation housing should not just be about better buildings, but about creating better lives.
